Karat describes the proportion of gold in a gold alloy; it is separate from carat weight for a gemstone. Ask for the material description and any quality mark on the exact ring. Do not infer composition from a photograph or the color selected in a configurator.

GIA notes that white gold is commonly rhodium plated and that this coating may need renewal. Ask whether the ring you are viewing is plated, whether replating is included in any service plan, and what it would cost outside that plan.

Compare complete rings in person

Try similar designs in your preferred materials where possible. Pay attention to the whole ring’s weight and inner profile. A wider band, deeper band and larger head change the experience independently of metal color.

Look at the metal beside your selected stone in consistent light. You are choosing an appearance you enjoy. There is no requirement to match your skin tone, existing jewelry or a partner’s ring.

Get practical answers before personalization

Ask how the actual alloy and construction affect resizing or repair options. Mixed-metal designs deserve a description of both the head and band. A finish or engraving can also be worth discussing before committing to a future alteration.

Keep a material and maintenance record
