Ask where the measurement starts

If two sellers provide a height, ask whether they measure from the finger, band or another reference point. A number is only comparable when the method and configuration are comparable. Do not assume a sample with a different center stone will have the same final profile.

Look underneath the center. Ask the jeweler to identify the basket or gallery and explain how the head joins the band. You are gathering information, not conducting a home strength test.

Try the companion ring now

A lower head can occupy the space where a straight wedding band would sit. A higher design may provide clearance, but that is something to verify with the exact two rings together. A curved band or a deliberate gap can be an aesthetic choice rather than a problem.

Ask whether the rings touch prongs, an exposed stone edge or another area that could cause wear. Record the combination that was actually tried, including the companion band’s width and shape.

Rehearse ordinary contact

Try typing or resting your hand naturally, with permission in the shop. Notice whether the ring turns, presses or catches. Do not deliberately drag it through delicate material or use force to test it.

For work involving gloves, tools or machinery, follow the applicable workplace rules. A lower setting does not certify jewelry as safe for a task. A storage and removal routine may matter more than a small height difference.

Choose your acceptable tradeoff

You may enjoy an elevated center enough to plan around it, or prefer a closer profile while accepting a gap beside another ring. Write the tradeoff in your own words before choosing between photographs.
