How to Compare Jeweler Quotes for a Complete Engagement Ring
Use an itemized engagement-ring quote worksheet covering the exact stone, setting, required costs, return window and resizing exclusions. Includes a worked budget comparison.
Compare two quotes only after you know what each one includes. A setting price, a completed ring total and a “from” price describe different things. Attach the stone identity, configuration and written purchase terms to the number before deciding which offer fits your brief.

Match the configuration before comparing the total
Record the exact setting, metal, ring size and center stone. Keep the center’s weight and dimensions separate from accent or total carat weight. Add the laboratory document reference where supplied and ask the jeweler to match it to the actual stone.
If one quote changes the stone origin, dimensions or setting, that may still be a useful shopping alternative. Label the change explicitly. It answers “which complete option do I prefer?” rather than “which seller charges less for the same item?”
Build a line-item quote worksheet
Copy this original structure into your appointment notes. Use “not quoted” for missing costs; a blank must not silently become zero.
| Line | Identity or condition | Cost field |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Exact design, alloy, size and accents | Amount and what is included |
| Center stone | Identity, dimensions and document reference | Amount or explicitly included |
| Required completion work | Mounting, sizing or customization if charged | Amount or explicitly included |
| Destination costs | Applicable tax, shipping and other required charges | Confirmed total or unresolved allowance |
| Optional additions | Service plan, engraving or other selected extras | Keep separate until chosen |
| Complete required total | Same currency and named configuration | Quote date and any expiry condition |
Worked example: the lower headline can change
Hypothetical quote A lists a $650 setting and a $950 center, then $40 mounting, $150 tax and $25 delivery. Its required total is $1,815. Hypothetical quote B is $1,850 including those items, but a required resizing charge is still unquoted. These are invented numbers to demonstrate the worksheet, not current retailer offers.
Against a $2,000 ceiling, A leaves $185. B leaves at most $150 before the unresolved sizing amount. If sizing is later quoted at $100, B becomes $1,950 and leaves $50. You can then compare the actual configurations and conditions rather than choosing from the first number displayed.
Read exceptions beside the broad policy headline
As checked September 13, 2026, Blue Nile’s return policy describes a 30-day window measured from shipment and includes conditions and exclusions. Its non-refundable section identifies personalized, custom, engraved and post-purchase resized items among the exclusions. Read the full policy and obtain clarification for the particular order.
Its resizing page separately describes eligibility for an initial free resize within the first year on qualifying rings, with design and alteration restrictions. These are examples of why “returns available” and “free resizing” are incomplete fields. They are not a promise that your ring or another retailer follows those terms.
Capture the policy questions that change the decision
Ask these questions before an irreversible customization, using the actual seller’s written terms.
| Topic | Question | Record to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | What event starts it, and when must the item be sent back? | Record the applicable deadline calculation |
| Personalization | Does engraving or custom work change eligibility? | Resolve before authorizing it |
| Sizing | Is this design eligible, within what limits and at what cost? | Record the proposed route |
| Service | Which inspections or repairs are included, and what is excluded? | Save the written scope |
| Timing | Does the exact size and configuration meet the intended date? | Keep the seller’s stated expectation |
Choose with the unanswered questions still visible
Use three statuses beside each quote: confirmed, awaiting answer or declined. If the ring you prefer has an unresolved sizing or return condition, keep that status visible while asking for clarification. A promotional deadline does not fill a missing specification.
Finish with a short decision note: the exact option, complete total, feature you prioritized and tradeoff you accepted. Keep the dated quote and applicable terms with the brief. The worksheet supports your comparison; it does not authenticate a diamond, assess its market value or replace the seller’s order contract.
